How come in the "Outsiders" movie the Socs are from the the South but in the book they are from the West?

How come in the "Outsiders" movie the Socs are from the the South but in the book they are from the West? Why do you think that change was made? I was thinking maybe it was for alliteration so the audience could remember, but other than that it seems useless.
