Computer desktop GUI problem?

My icons have disappeared from my desktop. I still have my wallpaper. When I right click the drop down menu does not appear so I can't check to see if the show icons has been deselected. I am able to access internet and files and programs via the task manager. How do I solve this problem? Is it a virus?
